Halloween

Here’s a little something I wrote a few years back about what I saw one Halloween night.

Ghosts, Goblins, Witches and the whole lot … I also saw cheerleaders and football players.. I saw cowboys and Indians.. I saw a princess or maybe 2.. I saw fairies and angels and firefighters and doctors .. I saw monsters and goblins  and vampires too… and then I looked past the costumes and wow did I see some really cool things.. I saw families together having fun, laughing and playing as the night grew dark…. I saw the love between mother/father and child… parents that made the night be about having fun and being a child… I saw costumes lovingly made .. I saw the patience and time it took for those costumes .. made or store bought … there were parents who made sure their child got to be who they wanted on this one day of the year.

Does it really matter in this day and time how this night originated and from which group of people or religion may have started any of it .. as it is .. it’s a collection … an infusion of many backgrounds, many religious beliefs as well as family traditions and lets not forget the media.. all these things have made it what it is today .. and now it is up to you .. each individual to make it what YOU want it to be..

For the most part I saw Halloween night being one of family love and harmony .. there was no fussing about what gifts to give or buy .. there was no bickering about whose house to go to for you go to them all.. there was no dollar amounts being brought up and it wasn’t even about who had the most expensive costume..  because at this time of year .. better doesn’t always mean more expensive!

To me as a child Halloween was far better than Christmas… there was nothing I had to worry about except how I dressed.. and I could be anything in the world I wanted to be this night and no one would say how ridiculous … because the more ridiculous the better it seemed to be.

Halloween to me is the true meaning of being a kid… allowing your imagination take over and then there’s the CANDY!!!! It can’t get any better than that!

All Hallows

All Hallows

All Hallows is drawing ever so near
Shhhhhhhhh, what’s that creepy sound I hear?

That’s the wind now blowing a cooler breeze
Creaks and moans radiating from the branches of the trees

They say the veil between worlds is growing really thin
Spirits are said to cross over and glide across the land with the wind

Vampires, werewolves, monsters and witches too
I have heard that they would like to meet with you

The vampires looking for a bit of a snack
You better watch out for that shadow lingering over your back

The werewolves ready their voices now
For when the sky darkens they will begin to holler and howl

Monsters of every shape, size and kind are said to come out
Scaring the children making them scream and shout

The witches cackle and ready their brew
On the hunt for a lizard, a toad and a rat or two

Don’t worry, there’s nothing really to fear
It’s just that time of the year

When all things spooky and unknown come out to play
Causing chaos and fright all night and day!

I love this time of the year when the breeze turns cold
When candy is free and spooky stories are told.

All Hallows its soon….
What was that, that just flew past the moon!

All Hallows

Quick and Easy Window Silhouettes

You’ve seen the window silhouettes in store.. usually priced anywhere from  $5  up to  $10-$15 each. Depending on how many front windows you have .. it could end up being a good chunk of change that could be put to better use somewhere else.

My money saving window silhouettes cost $2 or less per window.

  • I bought a $2 white shower curtain liner.
  • Found some silhouette images online that I liked.
  • Printed the silhouette images.
  • Projected the images on the shower curtain liner.
  • Traced the images with black sharpie
  • Painted he silhouettes with black acrylic craft paint
  • Let dry
  • Hung in window
  • Highlighted with a blue spot light behind it

……………….. and I still have enough curtain left for 2 more windows! The great thing about these, besides the price is that you can make them be anything you want. Instead of having to settle for whatever designs this years halloween section has to offer.

I’ll make another large one to cover my large 3 panel window next.. will update with photos soon.

I’m a What?

I’m a What?

A witch, you say?
Let me tell you why that’s perfectly okay!

I’m filled with magic from head to toe
But things don’t just happen when I twitch my nose.

What’s that? A warty face and talking toad?
Come now, that misconception is pretty old.

Let me tell you all about the real me
Then maybe… just maybe you will see.

My book of shadows is merely the pages of my mind.
That magic candle burning bright, that’s the light I carry inside.

My magic potion, simply put, is the love that I share.
My broomstick, how I fly – that’s my dreams drifting through the air.

The cauldron that holds my brew
Well that’s my soul, I thought you knew!

The brew that bubbles deep inside
You see that’s my spirit, I cannot hide.

So call me a witch if that’s what you want to do.
I’ll send you some love, for that’s the kind of magic that I do!

Many Blessings,

My Inner Child Wants to Play

Candy and Caramel coated apples on a stick
The year is passing us by really quick

The trees begin to change into their fall attire
Families gather around a warm, glowing fire

Roasting and toasting as the year nears it’s end
You can feel a chill in the air from the cool Autumn wind

Trick or Treat, candy sweets and costumes too
Scary monsters roam the streets with ghastly ghost shouting BOO!

Pumpkins carved and lit to light the way
Scarecrows placed to rush the birds away

Shorter the days and longer the nights
Movies are playing to cause us a fright!

There’s a great big pile of leaves to jump in and play!
I think I’ll release my inner child today!

Tossing leaves of red, yellow, brown and gold high into the air
I don’t even care if they land in my hair!

For I am a child at heart and I like to live that way
Where all my dreams may come true…..
and my worries stop at how much longer I get to stay out and play.

Yeah, I think I’ll release my inner child today!

Many Blessings,
Raventalker

Halloween Apps for Your Phone

Halloween Scene Lite – Lets you create custom scenes for your phone backgrounds. It’s a live wallpaper thats is animated with birds flying, trees swaying, the sun rising and setting and much more.

GOSMSTHEME Halloween Theme – allows you add Halloween images to your text messages.. very cool indeed!

PhotoFunia – not a Halloween App particular but has some cool Halloween images that you can add yourself to like the scene I have on the banner and About Section of this blog.

I wish this list was a whole lot longer but the sad thing is .. 🙂 the Application makers out there just aren’t cool enough for Halloween.LOL.

I did find tons of Halloween wallpapers and ringtones, but no other Halloween themed apps other than the ones I already stated.

Phonezoo.com – This is a totally free site that allows you to upload any song you like and make it your ringtone. I have the Bewitched theme:-) They also have tons of stuff already uploaded you can choose from.

Monsters Made Simple

OK so you have a very limited budget for your Halloween decorating… and………………… What’s Halloween without spooky monsters and ghosts????

Here’s How I just made 2 monsters in about 20 minutes:

Metal Garden Stakes – can find these at any home improvement store – they range in cost according to height – $2 – $6 … I purchased 2  – 4′ stakes for $4.27 each

Fabric – Purchased some fabric from Walmart’s $1 table   – 10 yards = $10

Foam skulls  – you can also use masks from Old Halloween costumes or purchase them from Dollar Tree for $1 each …. the foam skulls cost me $3 each

PVC pipe – I purchased 2 – 10′ pipes for $1.97 each

45% PVC  elbows   – $.51 each
________________________________
Ok so once I got home I realized that I forgot to grab a couple of PVC Ts  – those would have been used to join a pieces of PVC together for the neck and shoulders. Since I didn’t feel like running back to Lowes for a couple of $1.25 Ts .. I improvised. OK so I improvised a lot on these.. but hey.. the outcome was still just as good as if I had actually remembered all  the parts I needed.

First I hammered the garden stake into the ground.. then since I forgot zip ties, I used packing tape to fix my PVC to the stake to the height I wanted the monster.

Then I added the shoulders .. ok since I forgot the PVC Ts I again had to use the packing tape to fix it in place. It’s covered up! LOL No One will ever know.. ok except you guys because I told ya!

Next I added the PVC elbows to make the shoulders

The next step is simply draping old fabric over the frame to bulk up your monster and ummm cover up my improvisions.  Attach the skull to the PVC as well  .. continue draping fabric. Use hot glue to secure everything in place. Tatter the fabric so it has that monsterish look to it and there ya go! Add some colored lighting at night and you have some quick, inexpensive and creepy monsters to guard your walkway, path or door.

I found these years ago, not sure where, but thought  I’d share. They are a great addition to party invitations, name place holders, or add candle to them and add them to your centerpieces.

Just found out from Scott that you can find these at

Preserving Your Jack O’Lanterns

This is something I use to struggle with every year…. I’m itching to carve my pumpkins but can’t do it too soon or they rot before Halloween.

One year, one of those DIY shows said you should put vassaline on all of the cut edges of your pumpkin after carving it. I gave it a try and have been doing it every year since! It works! This trick will give you a few extra days of display time.

Another year, one of those DIY shows said to carve your pumpkin from the bottom instead of the top. The stem being the source of all the pumkins nutients.. this made sense, so I gave it a try. IT WORKS TOO!!!

So now I cut my pumpkins from the bottom to carve them and then rub vassaline on all the cut edges. Instead of them lasting 3 days and then going all limp and caved in.. they stay nice and fresh looking for at least a full week before starting to wrinkle and rot.
